Creating a successful classroom community is an ongoing, collaborative process between students and the teacher. This is essential for student development and classroom learning, which is reliant on the students ability to work together with each other as well as the teacher to enrich the learning of all. By setting the tone of community and interdependence among all members of the classroom at the beginning of the year, the tone establishes a strong foundation to build on for the rest of the year. I will do this through a series of activities set up like a treasure hunt that requires students to complete different tasks that require the class members to work together. Some of these tasks will include untying a human knot, stacking cups without using any hands, and navigating across the room without touching the floor or using words.
I will also build community through literature using books like Wonder, Each Kindness, and The Other Side to show how students can put themselves in another person shoes and find empathy for other people's situations. I will also use classroom meetings, fishbowl discussions, and creative writing to help students explore the different emotions, strategies, and action plans that students can use to include others in the community in a kind and respectful manner.
I will continue to build community during the year using strategies like our classroom jobs, which teach responsibility to the group as well as individual responsibility, group projects that help students learn how to work together and communicate to find consensus in a group, and student plays which teach students the confidence of public speaking. They will also learn how members contribute behind-the-scenes as well as on the stage to making a production a success. These are some of the strategies that will help build community throughout the year and create a safe, caring, and respectful community for everyone to work and learn.
